Here's a little bit about us:

Team 39 was started in 2006 at Highland High School in Gilbert Arizona by Ken Lloyd. Our team stemmed from the Remnants of Team 64, the Gila Monsters. When the Gila Monsters retired, they split off into two teams, team 1013 who resides in Queen Creek, and us, team 39.

History of competitions we've attended:

Our first year was tough but fun. We had an even mix of old and new members and were trying to get all the kinks of the new club worked out. That year we only went to the Arizona regional, and we were eliminated in either the qaurter or the semi finals. (Unfortunately I can't remember, but I think it was the quarter finals)

2007 was a great year for us. We picked up some new members, including some who could program and ended up with a great robot that year. This year we attended two regionals and the nationals. In arizona we pair up with the other half of the Gila Monsters, team 1013 and team 60 to win the Arizona regional. In Las Vegas we were alliance partners with team 987 and team 597, unfortunately we were beaten in the finals. At nationals we had a great time, however we were eliminated in the quarter finals of the Newton division.

So far this year we have a stellar team and a great robot! We allied with team 1165 and team 60 again in Arizona and won! In Las Vegas we paired with team 987 and team 1013 both for the second time and won the Las Vegas regional also! Now we are looking forward to nationals and preparing as best we can.

History of our work in the community:

In our first year not much was done in terms of helping the community, but we were just getting started and were a bit in over our heads the first year.

In 2007 we started to do a bit more. We hosted the Duel in the Desert, a pre season robotics get-together/competition for local arizona teams. We also did some basic community service, such as picking up trash.

This year, due to the death of Ken Lloyd, our team was at a loss for a leader for quiet some time. A month or two before the competition the Special Education teacher, Mr. Cesolini, at Highland High School volunteered to be our sponsor. Unfortunately since no member had experiance in dealing with our school disricts policies, we were not able to host the Duel in the Desert this year. (However team 2380, Jag Robotics, a first year team, generously hosted the Duel which was a great success!) Even though it's been tough this year we did manage to give the Special Education students at our school a presentation on robotics. We talked with them about FIRST, about what we did, and we had a hands on open question session. We are also planning to give a similar presentation to some of the local Elementary Schools.
